Purchase Guide

How do you buy lottery tickets in California?

Purchase in person at authorized California Lottery retailers. Cash is widely accepted. Debit cards and credit cards may be accepted at some retailers (varies by location and store policy—check with the retailer). No online or app purchases allowed. Entry close times vary by game (ranging from 1:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. PT on draw days).

Purchase steps

How to buy

  1. 01

    Choose an authorized retailer

Buy tickets only from licensed lottery retailers. Phone, mail, and direct internet purchases are not part of the standard Arizona ticket-buying flow.

  2. 02

Use the retailer’s accepted payment method

Payment methods vary by retailer and location. Some stores may accept cards, while others limit lottery purchases to cash or debit only.

  3. 03

    Buy before the game-specific cutoff

Varies by game; published draw entry close times range from 1:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m, with exact cutoff times set by the game and drawing.

Know before you buy
  • Check the schedule for the specific game you want to play. Not every game uses the same cutoff time.
  • Keep the ticket flat and readable, and sign it after purchase if you want to protect ownership before claiming.
  • Use official lottery digital tools for results, ticket scanning, and retailer lookup, not for purchases unless the state lottery explicitly offers online play.

Use official lottery tools

Use CA Lottery Official App or the official website for scans, posted numbers, claim instructions, and final confirmation.

Verify at a retailer

An authorized California retailer can scan your ticket on an official terminal before you begin a claim.

Before you claim a possible winner

Always confirm a winning ticket with an authorized retailer or the official California lottery before you begin a prize claim. Published results help you check numbers quickly, but the official lottery remains the final authority.

Privacy Rules

Can California lottery winners remain anonymous, and can they use a trust or LLC to claim privately?

No. Winner's full name, retailer name/location, win date, and prize amount (including gross/net installments) are public records subject to disclosure. No anonymity available.

Privacy status

Winners Must Be Publicly Identified

Public disclosure

California generally requires lottery winners to be publicly identified. Your name, city, and prize amount may be disclosed as part of public records or lottery announcements.

Claiming through a trust or LLC

Not allowed
California’s official materials say a trust may be formed before claiming, but Lottery regulations do not allow a trust to claim the prize. The claim form also requires the individual claimant’s legal name, signature, and identification details, while group claims are handled through named individual members or a group representative—not an LLC or trust.
Detailed disclosure rules

California provides no winner anonymity. Public records include full name, retailer name and location, win date, and prize amount (including gross and net installment payments). Other personal or identifying information is not disclosed without permission unless legally required. Trusts or LLCs are not supported for private claiming; claims require the individual winner's legal name, signature, and identification details.

Before you claim

Protect your privacy before you claim

Protect your identity

  • Sign the back of the winning ticket right away.
  • Keep copies or photos of the signed ticket and completed claim form for your records.
  • If you claim by mail, use certified mail and keep your mailing records.
  • Bring current government-issued photo identification if your claim requires identity verification.
  • Do not share extra personal information beyond what is needed for your claim or related request.

Decisions to make before claiming

  • Whether you want to elect any confidentiality option available for the prize amount.
  • Whether legal, tax, or appointment planning should happen before you submit claim paperwork.
  • Which prize details may still be disclosed even if your name stays confidential.
Prize Claiming

How do you claim California Lottery prizes, what are the deadlines, and what happens to unclaimed prizes?

Prizes of $599 or less can be claimed at a participating retailer, at a District Office, or by mail. Prizes of $600 or more can be claimed by mail or at a District Office with a completed claim form (same-day check processing is possible for prizes of $600–$1,000 at District Offices with valid photo ID until 4:30 p.m.). Draw-game prizes (except Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots) must be postmarked or received within 180 days of the winning draw date. Mega Millions and Powerball jackpot prizes have a one-year claim period. Scratchers prizes must be postmarked or received within 180 days of the announced end-of-game date.

How to complete the claim

01

Sign the ticket

Sign the back of the ticket as soon as possible so you can establish ownership before beginning the claim.

02

Confirm the winner

Check the numbers again using the official lottery tools or a retailer scan before you complete any claim paperwork.

03

Match the prize to the claim method

Use the prize threshold ladder below to decide whether the claim belongs at a retailer, by mail, or at a lottery office.

04

Prepare documents

Gather the signed ticket, identification, and any claim form or tax information required for the prize amount.

Claim deadline

Most prizes must be claimed within 180 days. Once that deadline passes, the ticket is no longer valid for payment.

Required documents

  • Signed winning ticket
  • Completed and signed claim form
  • Valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID for eligible same-day district office payment claims
  • Claim Authorization Receipt, if available

What happens to unclaimed prizes?

If a valid claim is not made within the applicable claim period, unclaimed prize money is treated under California law as lottery revenue rather than being paid to the winner.

Tax Planning

What taxes apply to California Lottery winnings, and how do they affect your take-home pay?

Federal withholding usually starts at 24% on larger prizes, and California applies 0.00% state tax where required. Use this section to understand what gets withheld, how payout choice affects taxes, and when to use the calculator for a personalized estimate.

What gets withheld

The IRS generally withholds 24% on prizes above $5,000. California also applies a 0.00% state rate where required.

Why withholding is not the final bill

Withholding is only an initial payment toward your eventual tax liability. Your total income, filing situation, and local rules can all push the real outcome higher or lower.

How taxes change your take-home pay

  • Federal withholding is just the starting point, so final tax owed can still change after you file.
  • Lump sum and annuity choices can lead to very different annual tax planning decisions.
  • Large wins can change your bracket, affect estimated payments, and make professional advice more valuable.
